Focus on the decision you want reviewed

A judgment, sentence or later order may leave questions about what happened and what comes next. Start by identifying the decision, the court and the specific issue that concerns you.

Yale’s post-conviction practice begins with the available record. A review should consider the history of the case and any prior work on the same issue; the name of a practice area does not establish that a particular remedy is available.

Give the record a clear starting point

Explain whether another lawyer is involved and whether an appeal or other request has already been filed. Useful questions include which records are needed, what issue can be assessed and whether the firm can assist with that review.

Keep dates and documents together. Do not assume that a general website description applies to the timing or circumstances of your case.

Bring what you have

• The court and case number.

• The judgment, sentencing papers or order in question.

• Later orders, notices and any prior filings.

• Information about existing representation.

• The main question you want reviewed.

What if I do not have the full record?

Identify what you do have and what is missing. The first conversation can clarify which additional records would be useful. Keep documents and confidential details out of the callback form.
