Start with the agency, the papers and the stage

You may have received an agency letter, a subpoena or federal court papers, or been contacted by an investigator. Identify what prompted you to seek help and whether a lawyer is already involved.

Yale’s practice includes federal criminal matters. A conversation can establish the issue that needs review and whether the firm can assist.

Questions to discuss with counsel

Ask what the documents require, which records should be preserved and what preparation is needed for the next event. Discuss how communications with an agency or other parties should be handled and how you will receive updates.

Bring what you have

• The agency or court name and case number, if known.

• Complete letters, subpoenas, charging papers and hearing notices.

• The dates printed on those documents.

• A short timeline and the questions you want to discuss privately.

Do I need to understand the document first?

No. Start with the actual document and explain how and when you received it. Avoid sending the document or confidential details through the callback form.
